Event 12: May Sun Better Than April Showers

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

May Siu & Grace Sun

Two lovely ladies are left in a sea of male poker studs.

May Siu (New York, NY) and Grace Sun (Long Island, NY) are seated at different tables but took a moment to congratulate each other.

Instead of battling it out for the "Last Woman Standing" both are encouraging each other to make the final table together.

Grace finished 17th in Event 1 and was Last Woman in that one.

May had the chip edge with 620,000 vs. Grace's 200,000.

Event 12: Double Knock-Out

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Bob Teti (Washington Township, PA) looked down to see two red kings up against two smaller stacks holding 5-5 and 8-9 of spades.

Board ran J-7-9-6-7.

With that scoop, Bob grew his stack to 800,000 and knocked out two players in the process.

Also at the table is Grace Sun (Long Island, NJ) who is one of the last two women remaining in the tournament.

Down to seven tables.

Event 12: Back From Break

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Sal Tringali (Toms River, NJ)

Sal Tringali is the shortest stack in the room. He has less than one big blind and awaits his fate when the other 70 players return from a ten minute break. C'mon double or triple up.

Largest stacks 780,000 - 870,000. Sal has 7,000.

Blinds: 8000 / 16,000 with 2000 antes

Hey Sal, love the cap!

Event 12: Capo Cracked

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Capo Busto

Since the bubble, players are dropping like flies.

A line of players waiting to get paid with William "Capo" Capella (Galloway, NJ) at the front holding an 83 green card.

Capo was still recovering from his pocket Kings losing to a QJ flush. Flop gave opponent a gutterball and the flush draw and perhaps he thought two over cards.

Capo bet his remaining 120,000 on the flop, got called, and lost.

"I live ten minutes away. I'm trying to go full time and was hoping to take this down" said Capella who will take home $359 for his 82nd finish.

Event 12: King Me!

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Rodriguez has a Bronx Tale

You can calculate all the poker odds in the world and make perfect strategic plays, but there's no accounting for superstition or bad luck.

Yinmi Rodriguez (Bronx, NY) and Tom Arrigoni (Edison, NJ) are each in the 400k chip range and get involved in a huge pot with a third player that has less than 100k.

On a board of K♠ 7♠ 7 A Arrigoni bets 175k and Rodriguez moves all in for 75k more, which Arrigoni calls.

Rodriguez: K 6(pair of kings, nut flush draw)
Arrigoni: Q♣ 7♣ (trip 7s)

River: 8

Rodriguez hits the flush and more than double-ups, to win an 800k chip pot. "I had to follow what I promised," explains Rodriquez, who is the unofficial chip leader, "whenever my boy is here and I have a king, I have to play it."

Rodriguez tells everyone at the table that the king is a popular card and "always" hits the board in their home game. So whenever his buddy is around Rodriguez plays any king.

"So far it's worked 14 out of 15 times," he says, but they haven't all come in this tournament.

Arrigoni takes the beat in stride and is left with 150k.

Event 12: Bernstein Bubbles

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

We're done to 90 players - all will get paid thanks to Michael Bernstein (Brooklyn, NY) who told me he had a feeling all day he was gonna be the bubble.

It was the small blind five seat vs. big blind Bernstein in the sixth seat.

SB raises Bernstein all in. Bernstein tanks, realizing the implications with only 32,000 remaining. Players gather around. My pen is ready...

"I know you have nothing. Just a picture card and a rag" predicted Bernstein.

In need of a double-up and willing to roll the dice, Bernstein calls and tables 5-7 of clubs.

Small blind shows K-4 of clubs.

Flop fell 8-J-6 giving Michael an open ended hope and the entire room a sweat.

But the turn Q and river 2 spelled bad news for Bernstein who after forty minutes will go out as your Event 12 bubble.

He was a good sport, as he ran out the cheering room, still willing to chat with me.
Michael was disappointed to outlast 1000 players and go out this way.

Two of his predictions came true: 1) He called opponent's hand and 2) He knew he was gonna be the bubble today.

This was the first time Michael has ever been the bubble and as he told me, "this will be the last".

Event 12: Nice Double Up

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Brandon Rutter (West Deptford) - Not The Bubble

He would have been called Bubble Brandon if his A-Q did not hold up, instead Rutter doubles his 132,000 stack outflopping opponent's K-Q.

Board Ran: A-7-10-5-K

Blinds 6000 / 12,000 with 2000 antes

Event 12: Bubble Bluff

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Kim (third from left) Awaits his Fate

It's blind on blind crime when the SB opens for 60k and the BB is all-in for 80k more. The small blind tanks and tries to get a read on JD Kim (Alexandria, VA) as the crowd swells around the table.

The small blind eventually folds and Kim shows K♣ 8♣ and the bystanders erupt with approval. The small blind says he had Q J, but doesn't show.

A few hands later Kim Sun (Long Island, NY) survives her all-in with AA♠ and doubles through Jeff Chan (Silver Spring, MD) who has
A Q♣.

During hand-for-hand play blinds have gone up to 6k/12k/2k ante.

Event 12: Hand For Hand Combat

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Bubble Madness

The back room is hopping as dealers are going hand for hand.

Mauricio Dasilva had all his chips in with Q-2 of spades and cracked pocket Queens.

Mauricio turned a flush and doubled up to continue on.

91 players remain and 90 get paid.

The room is about to explode...

Event 12: Bubble Time

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Grace hoping for a Sunny Finish

Players are anxious to find out exactly how many players remain and Grace Sun (Long Island, NY) isn't sure she can hang on with her 50k stack.

As play resumes (5k/10k/1k ante), 102 players remain and after one hand Randy Verrilli (Sparta, NJ) comes over to media row and asks, "how close did I come to the money?"

Roughly 10 away as the bubble is set to break.

Event 12: Natives are Restless

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Players are anxious to find out how close they are to the money. "How many left," is the most frequently asked question, followed by, "when's the next break?"

The answers: 110 (180k avg / 20 from the money) and, after this level, when the purple (500) chips are raced off and taken out of play.

Birthday boy, Julian Miranda (Union City, NJ), who was at risk 8 hours ago for his last 5k, is now up to 500k.

Event 12: Flipping Out

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Just before dinner break Official Borgata Blogger Bradley Utz (Burlington, NC) lost a 110k flip and was short coming back. "Can I win a flip just one time?" he wondered to no one in particular.

After the break, Utz is all-in again for 60k with A Q♣ vs 10 10♠. Utz flops an ace and is poised to double up, but his hopes are dashed with the river 10♣.

Utz leaps from his seat and can't believe his bad luck. "That's how I run," he says while heading to the rail. "Unbelievable."

Event 12: Chip Leaders

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Cantey Contemplates a Call

The chip leader continues to be Evan Sober (Baltimore, MD), who has 660k.

Other big stacks include Andre Cantey (Lindenwald, NJ) 515k and Harvey Avidan (Springfield, NJ) 450k.

Level 18 (4k/8k/1k ante) is underway and antes make a big jump as they double from 500 to 1k.

Event 12: Back in Action

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Play resume with the remaining 158 players all in the Poker Room. The average stack is 125k as Level 17 (3k/6k/500 ante) is underway.

The top 90 get paid and the short stacks are looking for the survival double-ups. There are several big stacks with more than 400k.

Event 12: Dinner Time

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

At the end of level 16, the dinner bell was rung.  Players in the Signature Room will bag their chips before heading out for a 45-minute dinner break.

They will return to the Poker Room and join the rest of the field.

Play will resume at about 8pm.

Event 12: Tough Decisions

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

We're seeing a lot of all-in bets that are forcing players to make tough folds.

On a board of A 9 5♠, Dion Bass (Yonkers, NY) calls the clock...on himself! After hearing he has 10 seconds to act, Bass folds.

One player, asks "did you have kings?" To which he replies, "I didn't take that long for nothing." Bass admits to calling the clock on himself, "many times."

Event 12: Sober Chip Leader

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Evan Sober

Evan Sober (Baltimore, MD) has taken the chip lead.  He's up to 430k.  When I asked him how he accumulated all those chips, he said "sheer luck".

Saad Ghanem has about 380k.  Birthday Boy Julian Miranda has ~360k.

Joanne Montavaro (utg) was all-in for her last 17,800 and called by Ted Geier.  Joanne's 87 offsuit was about 40% against Ted's AK suited.  That all changed when the flop came 9 8 3 and Joanne took the lead with a pair of 8s.  The last two came 3 T and Joanne doubled up.

End of level 15 and players are taking a break.

Event 12: 230 Players Remain

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Interesting conversation in progress on a table in the back of the Signature Room.

One player says "There's only going to be one happy person in this tournament".

Another player says "I'd be happy to finish second".

Third player says "I'd be happy to cash and get my money back at this point".

They're down to 23 tables (230 players).  With the last 90 getting paid, there's still a long way to go to get to that min-cash.

(We're still waiting on the final numbers and payout info.)

I'm sure some of the short-stacks in the room will be happy to make it to the 7pm dinner break and get the $10 dinner voucher.

Blinds are up to 2k/4k with 400 antes.

Event 12: Out Flopping Cancer

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Action Jackson

Last Spring Darlene Jackson watched her good friend Marguerite Spagnuolo, win a women's no limit tournament in Atlantic City. She railed the action for 15 hours just after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and never told Spagnuolo.

Now, one year later, Jackson is at the poker table, cancer free, and Spagnuolo is there to return the favor. "She was a real trooper," says Spagnuolo, "the radiation and chemo knock a lot of people out, but not her."

"If they hadn't told me, I would have never known," said Jackson who discovered a lump during a self-exam. The time line was swift as Jackson had a double mastectomy in May and finished
radiation and chemotherapy in December. In between Jackson, Spagnuolo and a few other Staten Island friends played in Borgata's September Poker Open Women's Event.

While treatment didn't take a toll on Jackson physically, it did take her hair, which has since grown back. She had reconstructive surgery earlier this year and has been given a clean bill of health. Jackson thanks her family, especially her 11-year-old son Matthew and daughter Jianna, age 9, for helping with the recovery.

"I've got to live for my children, she says, "It doesn't matter if I don't have hair or boobs or if they take away an arm. As long as I'm there for my children."

As for poker, Jackson has a healthy chip stack of 85k, which is well ahead of the chip average. And Spagnuolo would love nothing more than to keep supporting Jackson all the way to the final table.

Event 12: Updated Leaderboard

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

I counted 21 tables still in action in the Poker Room and among those 21 tables, Saad Ghanem (Rosedale, MD) is the chip leader with ~315k.

 Saad Ghanem

Second in chips is none other than the birthday boy himself, Julian Miranda.  He's sitting behind about 300k.

Here in the Poker Room, chip leader Tom Arrigoni was over 300k, but he shipped 36,900 to a short stack whose AJ outran Tom's pocket 7s.  Tom's now got about 280k.

Event 12: In-Tens-e Poker

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

Maio Makes a Set

Anthony Maio (Jamison, PA) is all in for 40k and at risk along with another player.

Maio has 10 10 vs JJ vs AA and hits a set of 10s to more than triple-up. Maio cashed in Event 1 (26th/$1,308) and is hoping his good fortune will lead to another deep run.

Event 12: 320 Players Remain

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

After 12 levels of play and a ten minute break, play has resumed with level 13 and blinds of 1,200/2,400 with 300 antes.

According to Tournament Director Tab Duchateau, about 320 players remain and 90 will get paid.

23 tables in the Poker Room and 9 tables in the Signature Room.

During the dinner break, whatever tables remain in the Signature Room will be relocated to the Poker Room.

Event 12: Gotta Love the Insta-Muck

$170 + $30 Big Stack NL (2 Re-Entry)

On the river with a board of J 7 4 3 7, seat 7 bet 16k.  Tom Arrigoni (Edison, NJ) gave it some thought, then made the call.  His opponent insta-mucked his hand.  Tom showed J4 for Jacks-up to take the pot.

 Tom Arrigoni

He's now up to ~270k and the chip leader in the Signature Room.  Not sure how he stacks up against the tables still in the Poker Room.
