Event 17: Jim Procaccini - 9th Place

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Jim Procaccini - 9th Place - $2,488

Jim Procaccini was blinded out and forced all in so he didn't look.

By the end of the hand, he didn't have to look. No matter what cards he had, he couldn't win as Nate Marmur hit quad 7-7-7-7 for the stone cold nuts.

Board ran: 5-9-6-7-7

Nate bet 10k on the river into a dry side pot but c'mon people he had a monster.

Brett Fox folded and Jim Procaccini flipped A-2 of clubs.

Jim is out in 9th place and will take home $2,488 for his efforts.

Event 17: Bob Courtney - 10th Place

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Bob Courtney - 10th Place - $2,212

On a heart heavy flop of 10-6-8 all the chips got in. Bob Courtney held 5-5 but was crushed by Brett Fox who flopped a set of eights.

Nate Marmur folded the nut flush draw and would have hit and A and a J on the turn and river - but no heart. Great fold.

Brett Fox is now the massive chip leader.

Event 17: Jamie Kerstetter - 11th Place

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Jamie Kerstetter - 11th Place - $2,212

Jamie was the last woman standing and some say the only woman playing in Event 17.

She was gracious in the defeat as her Q-J fell to Franco Bonacci's A-J.

All the chips got into the 200,000 pot when the flop fell 7-2-J

Jamie failed to improve on the turn 3 and river 3.

Event 17: Double, Double

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Blinds went up to 2k/4k with 400 antes.

Benjamin Earley was all-in pre-flop for (107,300) holding AQ against George Medrano, who was dominated with KQ.  The board came 9 6 3 Q 9 and Benjamin doubled up.

On the other table, Nate Marmur doubled through Joe Procaccini.

Eleven players remain.

Event 15 Recap

After two days of poker from the best of the best, including 2010 Borgata Poker Open WPT champion Dwyte Pilgrim and Matt Stout, Jesse Yaginuma (Silver Spring, MD), a heads up specialist, used his skill to defeat Mike Tauman (Metuchen, NJ) for the $1k (Event 15) title at the 2011 Borgata Spring Poker Open.

On the final hand, Jesse’s 9 kicker just edged out Tauman’s 7 kicker. Both hit an ace on the flop and all the chips got in on the turn. Yaginuma will take home $42,486 for his first place victory. “I played well and ran well” said Jesse who came back from a 3 to 1 heads up deficit.

Five friends were enjoying adult beverages from the rail but went out for food right before the final hand. “It’s nice having friends support you” said Jesse.

Michael Tauman from (Metuchen, NJ) was ecstatic to take home $23,367 representing the biggest poker score of his life. If Tauman failed to river a set of sevens before the bubble, he would have been long gone. His long time girlfriend supported him today in the Signature Room.

So how did we get to our classic heads-up match?

Day 2 started with 17 of the 146 players returning for their shot at the $146,000 total buy-in. Yaginuma, the 2009 Borgata Poker Open Heads Up Champion, got off to a great start and built his 192k chip stack to 550k and was the chip leader at the final table.

After winning lots of small pots, Yaginuma knocked out Andy Egan (Hickessin, DE) in 4th place ($11,330) and at one point, while 3-handed, had more than half the chips in play with 1.6 million compared to 350k each for Tauman and third place finisher Steve Russell (Coolville, OH), who took home $13,454.

Tauman began the day 6th in chips and knocked out Dwyte Pilgrim (Brooklyn, NY), the September 2010 Borgata Poker Open Champion in 5th place($8,497) when his AK bested Pilgrim’s AQ. Tauman was short stacked three handed, but started to make a move when he doubled through Yaginuma with AJ against Yaginuma’s pocket 7s. That, coupled with Tauman eliminating Steve Russell (Coolville, OH) in 3rd place ($13,454) gave Tauman the chip lead when heads up play began.

Tauman played well according to his opponent Jesse but it looked like experience took over in the end.

The other notable final table-ist was Gordon Eng (Cliffside Park, NJ), who finished 8th ($4,249). Eng won the $1,500 Event in the 2010 Spring Poker Open, but as one of the shorter stacks day didn’t run well. The final blow came when Eng held KQ and was eliminated by Adam Geyer (Austin, TX) who turned a full house with K8.

Geyer finished 6th ($7,081), while Christian Kohl (Suffield, CT) 7th/$5,665, Gordon Eng, Matt Iles (Atco, NJ) 9th/$31,86 and Anthony Villano (Englishtown, NJ) 10th/$2,382 rounded out the top 10.

But once again congratulations to our winner, poker pro Jesse Yaginuma who was very happy to take Event 15 down and take home the trophy.

Event 17: 12th place - Kovaci

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Mirsad Kovaci (Allentown, PA) moved all-in utg and action folded around to Benjamin Earley in the big blind, who called.

 Mirsad Kovaci

Mirsad held AQ and was racing against pocket Tens.  The board ran dry for Mirsad and he was busted in 12th place.

He'll pick up $2,212 for his efforts here today.

Event 17: 13th place - Perry

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Brett Fox moved in from the small blind and John Perry (Stamford, CT) called all-in from the big.

John's AT was ahead of Brett's KJ, but a Jack came on the board and Brett took the pot.

John took 13th place and $1,935.

Event 15: 1st Place - Yaginuma

$1000 + $90 NL

Jesse Yaginuma - 1st Place
$42,486

Congratulations to Jesse Yaginuma (Silver Spring, MD) who just beat Michale Tauman heads-up to take down Event 15 for $42,486.

"I did my best" said Jesse who at one point was a 3 to 1 dog when it came to heads-up chips.

But the former Borgata Heads Up winner played his game, took the lead, then won the final key hand where his A-9 just edged out Michael's A-7. Kicker played.

"I ran well and won the flips I had to" said Jesse who congratulated his opponent and complimented his game.

"This was a nice one to win" said our winner.

His friends, who also play poker, railed him the entire heads-up then took off to grab some grub and missed the final hand.

Look for Yaginuma to play in the Championship Event.

Event 17: 15th - 14th places

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Tony Sinishtaj (Flushing, NY) got all-in holding A6 suited against Brett Fox, who had pocket 8s.  The board came Q J 9 3 Q and was no help to Tony.  He finished in 15th place, earning $1,935.

Joe Cappuccio (Hammonton, NJ) was all-in and ahead with AT against Franco Bonacci's dominated A8.  The flop was a safe 6 6 2, but then an 8 on the turn gave the lead to Franco.  The 2 on the river was no help and Joe was busted in 14th place ($1,935).

Event 17: 16th place - Eisner

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Steve Eisner (Oxnard, CA) was another player who worked his short-stack well to survive the play-down to the bubble.  He got his last chips in the middle and ran into Jamie Kerstetter's pocket Kings.

Steve Eisner finished in 16th place, earning $1,659.

Event 15: 2nd Place - Tauman

$1000 + $90 NL

Michael Tauman - 2nd Place
$23,367

Michael Tauman had a 3 to 1 chip lead heads up but ran into Jesse Yaginuma who had the best kicker in the final hand.

The final hand had Michael leading out on a flop of: 3-A-8 and Jesse re-raising to 200,000.

Deuce on the turn had Jessing making it 200,000 and Michael jamming all in. Jesse called and had Michael covered.

Michael said, "What's your kicker?" realizing both players had an ace.

Michael tabled A-7 and Jesse showed A-9.

Inconsequential Jack hit the river and Jesse won the tournament with the better kicker.

The $23,367 was the largest cash ever for Michael who was nearly eliminated before the bubble.

"I had pocket sevens and hit a seven on the river to survive. Then I was dealt out big pair after big pair growing my stack six to seven times in an hour" explained Tuaman.

Michael's long time girlfriend sat behind him for the entire heads up battle, showing support.

Event 17: 18th - 17th places

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Allen Friedman (Smithtown, NY) nursed his short-stack for quite a while, but once they reached the money, he got them in and was busted.

Allen finished 18th for $1,659.

Joe Mascio (Sewell, NJ) was all-in against the big stacks of George Medrano and Nicholas Lowry.  They checked down the board of K 6 4 Q 6.  George showed 54 for a pair of 4s.  Nicholas mucked.  Joe showed A9 and headed for the payout desk.

Joe Mascio finished 17th for $1,659.

The level expired and the remaining 16 players took off for a break.

Event 17: In The Money

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Seat 1 raised from the cutoff, George Medrano 3-bet from he small blind, the cutoff 4-bet, George moved in, and after a bit of thinking, the cutoff called all-in, showing AQ.  George had the mother of all pairs, pocket Aces.

The board ran out 6 5 5 7 Q and George took the pot, sending his opponent home with the title of bubble-boy.  George is now up to 264k and the chip leader by a nose (Bob Courtney has ~260k).

Iverson 'Cotton' Snuffer and Nate Marmur - happy to be in the $$

The remaining 18 players drew seats and moved to the final three tables.  They're all in the money and guaranteed to leave with at least $1,659.

Event 17: New Chip Leader

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Blinds are up to 1,200/2,400 with 30 antes.

 Bob Courtney

On a flop of T 7 5, seat 1 was all-in against Bob Courtney.  Seat 1 held pocket 4s and was crushed by Bob's T9 (pair of Tens).  The last two came 9 J and Bob claimed the pot, sending his opponent home.  Bob chipped up to ~220k.

20 players remain.

Jamie Kerstetter moved in for ~50k, then Brock Parker moved in.  Everyone else got out of the way.  Jamie's AT suited was dominated by Brock's AQ off, but the board came A J 5 3 T and Jamie caught a 3-outer on the river to survive and double up.

Brock was left with about 5k.  He got all-in and tripled up, then was all-in again with two players, who checked to the river as the board came 7 4 2 9 3.   Bob Courtney bet and Jamie Kerstetter folded.  Brock showed pocket Queens, but Bob held pocket 3s and had hit a set on the river.  Bob's now up to almost 250k.

6-max specialist Brock Parker was busted by a 2-outer in 20th place, just two away from the money.

19 players remain and they are now playing hand-for-hand.

Event 15: Jesse Gains Lead - 500K Pot

$1000 + $90 NL

500,000 pot with no bets on the river. Guess that runner, runner, runner clubs and everybody scared.

Jesse tabled A-Q and Mike tossed over Q-J showing disgust he didn't bet.

140,000 pre-flop bet by Jesse, followed by 137,000 turn bet.

Mike took forever to check the river after Jesse checked to him. Looks like he wishes he took a stab, or stayed completely out of that pot.

Jesse adds 500,000 to his stack.

Board ran: 210♠ 6♣ K♣ 4♣

Event 17: Snuffer Doubles

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Still 21 players.

Event 15: Even Steven

$1000 + $90 NL

Jesse Yaginuma has climbed all the way back to make this an even dogfight.

Both have approximately 1.25 million chips.

Jesse kept betting rivers and Mike kept folding. This last hand, Jesse bet 100,000 on the river again, and Mike decided to call.

Mike should have zigged when he zagged. This time Jesse hit the river and won the hand.

Board: 4-9-9-2-6

Jesse showed 6-7 and Mike declined to show his hand.

"I put him on a spade draw, then a bluff" said Mike.

Right read kind of - as Jesse did have two spades and there were two spades on the flop.

Jesse's river 6 has brought his stack to a true heads-up battle. Somebody call NBC.

Event 17: Fox Fills Up

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Brett Fox opened for 4,500 utg and got action from the small blind.  On the flop of A Q J rainbow, it was checked to Brett, who bet 6k and got called.

 Brett Fox

Turn was an 8 and again it was checked to Brett.  This time he moved in for 23,500 and got called.  His opponent showed AT for top pair, but Brett held QJ for two pair.

Event 15: Jesse Gains Chips

Event 17: Back in Action

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Event 15: Heads Up Continues

$1000 + $90 NL

Mike vs. Jesse

Mike's girlfriend of 16 years is rooting him on while John, Adam Acacia, James, & Josh are railing Jesse Yaginuma (Silver Springs, MD).

Mike Tauman (Metuchen, NJ) has a monster lead and just took down a 100,000 pot holding a five when two more were on the board.

Event 15: 3rd Place - Russell

$1000 + $90 NL

Steve Russell (Coolville, OH)
$13,454

Steve Russell showed the bluff of the day, but it's not enough to take him to the title. He was hovering between 300k and 400k the last few hours, but never got anything going and winds up in third place.

Russell begins the final hand with 160k and calls the 32k preflop raise of Mike Tauman.

The flop is KQ 9and all the chips are in the middle.

Russell: J 2 (flush draw, gut shot straight draw)
Tauman: K♠ 2♠ (pair of kings)

Turn: 6♣ (brick)
River: 5♣ (brick)

Russell misses both draws and is on the rail. "Not too bad," says the contractor from Coolville, a small town in southeastern Ohio. "I wish I was still playing, but that's the way it goes."

Russell says he'll take his winnings and buy into the Championship Event.

Tauman and Jesse Yaginuma are heads up for the title, with Tauman holding a slight edge in chips.

Event 17: Dinner Time

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

The clock was stopped at 7pm and players were sent on a one-hour dinner break.  They'll get back to business at 8pm.

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

In a battle of the blinds, Jesse Cohen (sb) and the player in seat 1 (bb) saw a flop of 9 6 3.  All the chips went in and seat 1 showed 92 off for top pair.  Jesse held 87 off for the open-ended straight-draw.  The last two came 2 K and were no help to Jesse.

The stacks were close and had to be counted down, but Jesse was covered by 200 chips.  He reported to the rail in 24th place.

23 players remain.  18 get paid.

Event 15: Tauman Doubles Through Yaginuma

$1000 + $90 NL

Event 17: Ladies Are Good To Medrano

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

George Medrano (Rego Park, NY) picked up pocket Queens and busted a player when they held up.

On the next hand, Alex Caperonis was all-in for 27,600 from the small blind.  George tanked for a couple of minutes, counting out his chips (he had about 100k) then called, showing pocket Queens (again).

 George Medrano

"I only hesitated because it was back-to-back Queens" he said.  Alex held pocket 7s.  Board came K T 4 2 K and George's Queens held up again.  Alex was busted and George is now up to ~135k.

Down to 24 players now at four tables.  Six more to go to reach the money.

Event 17: Lowry Leaps Into Lead

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

On the last hand before the break, Nicholas Lowry moved in on the turn with the board showing T 9 4 8 with three clubs.  His opponent tanked and eventually the clock was called.

 Nicholas Lowry

Before his time expired he called, showing pocket Kings (both black).  Nicholas held AJ of clubs for the flush draw and open-ender, with one overcard.

The river was the 5 of clubs, completing the flush for Nicholas.

He doubled up to ~158k while his opponent was left with about 6k.

Event 15: Final Three

$1000 + $90 NL

Players are on a 10 minute break and this is clearly Jesse Yaginuma's tournament to lose as he has more than half the chips in play. Since the final table began Yaginuma has been picking his spots to raise and has been taking down small pots. He's also not afraid to let hands go when players play back at him.

Here are the latest chip counts:

Jesse Yaginuma (Silver Spring, MD) 1.6 million
Steve Russell (Coolville, OH) 366k
Mike Tauman (Metuchen, NJ) 355k

Event 15: 4th place - Egan

$1000 + $90 NL

Andy Egan (Hickessin, DE)
$11,330

After double through Dwyte Pilgrim earlier in the tournament with QQ, Andy Egan is down to 10 big blinds and shoves 100k all in with Q 10. Chip leader Jesse Yaginuma calls with A Q and Egan's dominated queen doesn't improve as he finishes in 4th place.

"I ran pretty well and avoided some trouble," says the mechanical engineer, who only plays poker recreationally. "I wish I could have had a few hands back and when I was short was waiting for a hand, but it never came."

Event 17: Slow Going

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Players are very aware of their situation and most are playing cautiously.

Average stack is almost 49k.

 Mirsad Kovaci

Alex Caperonis (Stamford, CT) tangled with Mirsad Kovaci (Allentown, PA).  On the river, the board showed Q J T 3 K (no flush possible) and Alex (cutoff) check-called a bet from Mirsad (button).  Mirsad showed 95 suited for the King-high straight.  Alex mucked and Mirsad claimed the pot.

Alex is down to about half the average.

Event 17: 50/50 Time

With 36 players remaining, they're at the 50/50 point.  With the final 18 players getting paid, half the remaining players will leave empty handed.

John Perry

John Perry (Stamford, CT) is hoping to be in the former group.  On a flop of Q 5 5 with two spades, he was all-in holding Q9 (Queens-up) against James Casement Jr, who held A3 of spades (flush draw with one overcard).

The last two came offsuit 7 6 and John doubled up to over 40k.  James was left with ~20k.

Event 15: 5th Place - Pilgrim

$1000 + $90 NL

Dwyte Pilgrim

Dwyte Pilgrim makes it 25k from the button (blinds 5k/10k/1k ante) and Mike Tauman reraises to 65k. Pilgrim moves all in for a total of 250k, Tauman calls and has Pilgrim covered.

Tauman: A K
Pilgrim: A Q♣

Pilgrim doesn't get any help and he's out in 5th place. "I played pretty well," says the September 2010 WPT Borgata Poker Open Champion. "I wish I could have hit that last hand. I was pretty short when we got to the final table and was able to play solid."

Event 17: No Queen for Queen

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Play resumed after the break with level 9, blinds 500/1,000 with 100 antes.

$7,081

Pilgrim takes his stack to 350k, while Geyer is out in 6th place.

Event 17: Two Too Tough

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Table two has morphed into a very tough table.  The one seat is currently empty (and I pity whoever gets moved in there).

 Brock Parker

Brock Parker, who has two 2009 WSOP bracelets won playing the 6-max format, (No Limit and Limit) and who beat Daniel Negreanu heads-up for one of those, (Limit Hold'em) is in the two seat.

With two shorter-stacks all-in holding pocket 5s and K9, Jamie Kerstetter (Ventnor, NJ) held pocket Tens and was ahead.

 Jamie Kerstetter

Then the flop came Q T T and Jamie's lead became insurmountable.  Nothing like flopping quads and sending two players packing to make your day.

Jamie is now up to about 95k and the new chip leader.  She's also the last woman sitting in this event.  (Apparently she was also the only woman ever sitting in this event.)

Event 15: 8th Place - Eng

$1000 + $90 NL

Gordon Eng (Cliffside Park, NJ)
$4,249

Adam Geyer opens the pot and Gordon Eng shoves 48k all in and Geyer calls 30k more.

Eng KQ

The flop brings the remaining two kings, but an 8 on the turn gives Geyer a full house. Eng misses his queen on the river and is out in 8th place.

Event 17: New Chip Leader

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Charles Furey has lost some ground and Reggie Franklin has taken the lead.

Reggie Franklin

On a flop of Q 9 4 rainbow, Charles Furey of Bridgewater, NJ (bb) led out for 1,775.  His opponent in the cutoff raised to 5k straight.  Charles announced he was all-in.  After a brief pause, his opponent mucked.  Charles showed Q9 for top two pair.

 Charles Furey

Charles is up to ~75k and the current chip leader.

Charles has come back today with a vengeance after busting out late last night, just short of the money in the $1,000 No Limit tournament.

Event 15: Pilgrim Doubles

$1000 + $90 NL

On a board of J 34♣ 9♠, Dwyte Pilgrim and Adam Geyer check from the small and big blinds respectively. Steve Russell, from the button, bets 23k and Pilgrim check raises all-in for 100k.

Geyer goes in the tank and repops all-in to isolate forcing Russell to fold.

Pilgrim: 33♣ (set of 3s)
Geyer: 9 5 (pair of 9s, flush draw)

River: 10♠

Pilgrim doubles up and is up to 225k, while Geyer drops to 300k.

Event 17: Blinds Up, Players Down

Event 15: 11th Place - Podell

Event 17: Good Laydown or Good Bluff?

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

Down to 17 tables already, meaning 102 players.

Currently playing in level 5 with blinds of 150/300 and 25 antes.

During the previous level, September 2010 6-max champ Dan Spirer in the cutoff (New Hope, PA) was all-in on the river with a board of  T 6 2 4 9 (no flush possible).  He had check-raised his opponent on the button, who had led out for 2k and was now facing a bet of 8,125 more.

 Dan Spirer

Dan offered to show one and James Boyle, who was at the same table, warned him that showing any cards with action pending was against the rules and James would call for the floor and a penalty.

Dan then offered to show his cards once his opponent folded.  After a couple of minutes in the tank, the player on the button surrendered.  Dan showed AQ offsuit for Ace-high.

Good laydown or good bluff?  Only the button knows.

Shankar Pillai (Commack, NY)
$2,832

Jesse Yaginuma continues to build on his big stack as he eliminates Shankar Pillai in 12th place. Pillai is all in for 105k with pocket 8s, but Yaginuma out flops him with A K. $1000 + $90 NL

Matt Galluzzo (Marlboro, NJ)
$$2,478

Sevens are unlucky for Matt Galluzzo who loses back to back hands to pocket 7s and is eventually out in 13th place. Both hands come against Marc Podell, who doubles 35k through Galluzzo when his pocket 7s hit a set against Galluzzo's pocket jacks.

Two hands later Podell has 77 vs Galluzzo's A K and Podell doubles again (75k) to cripple Galluzzo who's busted by Andy Egan on the next hand.

Event 15: 42 Freeway

$1,000 + $90 NL

Table 2 Ready to Roll
Matt Galluzzo (right) Returns as a Short Stack

Driving to Atlantic City the 42 Freeway/AC Expressway is the fastest, most direct route. Today the remaining 17 players are now racing towards the more than $42,000 first prize in the $1k.

Rich Geyer (Austin, TX) is the chip leader with 336k, while Jesse Alexis Cohen (Ardmore, PA/28k) and Matt Galluzzo (Marlboro, NJ/40k) are the short stacks at around 10 big blinds. The average stack is 129k, but the median stack is 90k.

There's 7 minutes left on Level 14 (1,500/3k/400 ante) as the cards are in the air.

Event 17: Back For More

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

After grinding all Friday in the $1k (Event 15) and finishing 10 spots off the money, Mike Dentale (Brooklyn, NY) is back to continue his run at earning the Championship Event seat in the Borgata Leaderboard Point System. Dentale has been near the top of the standings all series long and is currently third overall. He trails Alek Givotovsky (New York, NY) by 41 points as this is the last day to earn the seat.

Also playing the 6 max is James Boyle (Havre de Grace, MD) as the room is now full and we're awaiting the arrival of the final 17 players in Event 15.

Event 17: Satty Saturday

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

On the eve of the Championship Event, this is Super Satellite Saturday, where players can play their way into the Main at a significant discount. The Sattys are at Noon, 3 pm and 7 pm (details here).

George Medrano (Rego Park, NY) is one player who passed on Friday's Main Events to play in a qualifier and was one of 7 players who earned their Championship ticket. "I was debating if I should late register for the noon ($350 NL tournament) or play the qualifier. I'm glad I locked my seat up,"

Medrano, after scoring his $2,700 seat for only $300 (89% saving), seems relaxed and focused as he plays today's 6 max.

Event 17: Shorties

$1,000 + $90 NL (6 Max)

The Signature Room is the place to be for today's action as the popular 6-handed tournament is underway. This format creates a lot of action, but players have to be cautious with their stacks as there's no re-entry safety net if they suffer a bad beat or go after unfavorable draws.

Players start with 15k in chips and levels are 30 minutes long. Blinds are 25/50, the button is in the two seat, we're starting with the teal deck, and the cards are in the air.

Even though several tables only have two or three players in their seats, dealers have been instructed to deal to all stacks. Let the fun begin!
