Event 9 Recap
Carlos, originally from Peru, will take home $10,476 for this long day of Omaha H/L 8B.
Many of these players prefer Omaha over No Limit or just want to improve their O-skills. Regardless, players were having a ton of fun throughout this well run tournament.
Our feature players included Allen Kessler and Chris Reslock who have a lifetime last-longer bet for $100. Allen won this round as he final tabled for 9th Place while Chris went out one behind the bubble.
Also opting for Omaha today are Hold'em regulars Gordon Eng, Larry Gold, and Joe Simmons. Bo Toft, Barry Gassen, Barry Levy, and Gloria LoRusso were also in the field . Gloria is quite accomplished in Omaha, where she has made six final tables (playing Omaha or Omaha/Stud mixed). She finished 13th today. With top 18 making the money, Gloria cashed for $698.
At one point, Barry Levy claimed the chip lead with 25,600.
Right after Chris Reslock was knocked out, his wife Joy was on the bubble.
Doug Zinneman built a wall of chips courtesy of quads – three times throughout the tournament then lost a hand against a straight flush. Doug rode his streak all the way to second place for $5,762, just falling short from the ultimate prize.
Once we were down to two tables the players exited The Signature Room and concluded Event 9 in Borgata's Poker Room.
The final table was a grind and took several hours to complete.
Last Woman Standing honors went to Toni Pennington who was chip leader after dinner and made it all the way to the final table where she exited 6th. At 2:30am, after getting knocked out, Avner, Patricia, Lynn, and Barry rooter their friend on as the table applauded. Toni's poker family support system (12 players strong) call themselves "The Rack Pack".Third place went to John Klodie who rubbed a lucky rabbit's foot he's carried around for forty years. John will add $3,317 to his Borgata bankroll.
But once again, our big winner hoisting the Event 9 trophy was professional poker player and pool shark Carlos Santos.
Carlos owns Action Billiards and Coffee in Jersey and a book called Running The table - The Last American Hustler has been penned about his life.
Tonight Carlos ran the final table to take home $10,476 first place prize. Look for Carlos to make another big run in Borgata's highly anticipated HOSE event.
Event 9: Carlos Santos - 1st Place
Carlos Santos - 1st Place - $10,476All day Carlos played primarily good cards, was patient, and read his opponents well.
Combined, these ingredients helped him become the chip leader, reach a final table, and ultimately win the tournament.
Carlos really wanted this trophy and let out a cheer upon realizing his full house was the winner.
Look for Santos in Borgata HOSE Event and maybe in the Championship Event next week.
Carlos is originally from Peru and currently owns Action Billiards and Coffee in New Jersey.
His key hand where he caught lucky on the river and seized the chiplead at first had him in a world of hurt against three kings. But that last card changed everything giving Carlos the nut low and a straight.
His friends railed him at the end of the tournament early Monday morning.
Event 9: Doug Zinneman - 2nd Place
Doug Zinneman - 2nd Place - $5,762Doug's heads up battle with Carlos Santos lasted only one hand.
Holding J-9-K-5 and outchipped, Doug shipped the rest of his chips and Carlos called.
The board ran out 10-3-Q-8-Q.
Carlos tabled 5-5-10-10 giving him a full house for the win.
Doug played like a champ today but fell one spot short from taking home the hardware.
Event 9: John Klodie - $3,317
John Klodie - 3rd Place - $3,317John had a knack for talking his opponents into doing what he wanted them to do.
With three players left, John's demise came against Carlos Santos.
Carlos raised every street and John called him down.
At showdown Carlos showed 5-7 for a straight against a board of 9-8-8-6-6 felting John's 10-6-4-3.
Event 9: Vaughan Machado - 4th Place
Vaughan Machado - 4th Place - $2,794He'll get his chance in next week's HOSE tournament. Vaughan hasn't played much poker lately but when he does it's mix games all the way.
He's played in WSOP mix game tournies and will try his hand this year in the $1500 HORSE.
Machado was only all in twice the entire tournament. The last time didn't work out so well despite flopping top set. The draw heavy board saw Doug calling with a gutterball draw and hitting it for the win.
Vaughan thought Event 9 was a tough structure but extremely well run.
Congrats to your 4th place finish for $2,794.
Event 9: Claudangelo Beaudouin - 5th Place
Event 9: Toni Pennington - 6th Place
Toni Pennington - 6th Place - $1,746Avner, Patricia, Lynn, and Barry rooter their friend on (keep in mind it's 2:30am). Toni and eleven other friends are all part of "The Rack Pack". "We support one another, go on poker cruises together...we literally picked each other up while playing poker."
The Rack Pack is floating around Borgata during the Spring Poker Open. They prefer to play Omaha and other mix games.
Toni did deserve applause. She was the chip leader before the bubble broke and ended up being the last woman standing.
She was disappointed in her 6th place finish because she had her eye on first place but the $1,746 she earned will certainly be put to good use.
Doug Zinneman knocked Toni out of Event 9 and had to come from behind to do so.
We'll look out for "The Rack Pack" in upcoming Events.
Event 9: Tom Bessoir - 7th Place
Tom is used to the grind of Omaha as he plays 15/30 cash 2 to 3 times a week. It was very impressive to watch Tom survive a short stack at least 6 times at the final table.
"Every time I was all in I either won or chopped" exclaimed Tom.
Regarding the final hand, Tom only had 30,000 and the blinds were 20,000. His A-2-5-6 fell to Carlos Santos who caught a straight.
Tom will stuff his wallet with $1,397 of cold hard cash for his Omaha play today.
Event 9: Freddie Rouhani - 8th Place
Farzad "Freddie" Rouhani - 8th Place - $1,048"I'd love to play in some WSOP Omaha events and this is great practice" explained Freddie.
Freddie was one of the more animated characters we've covered so far in the Borgata Spring Poker Open and I'm sure we'll see more of him in the days to come.

Your big stack is lucky rabbit's foot John Klodie with 284,000 and the shorty looking to double is Tom Bessoir.
Event 9: Allen Kessler - 9th Place
The poker professional and well known mix game specialist will take home $786 for his 9th Place finish.
The chainsaw ran out of gas as he was positioned in a spot and a hand he couldn't fold.

Event 9: Craig Hammerman Hammered - 12th Place
You can't feel too bad when you lose to quads, but it still hurts when you've been playing patiently, waiting for AA, are short stacked, and still lose.
Craig had a sic run earlier going from 5300 to 48,000 in 3 hands. He doubled up, then quaded up, then quaded up again. Solid - tight game was working today until the last hand.
Oh and by the way, guess who had the quads - it was Doug Zinneman for his third quad of the day.
Event 9: LoRusso Busto - 13th Place
Gloria is a retired school teacher, now a Borgata regular who did well in this Event last year so figured she'd give it another shot.

Event 9: Couple Of Bubbleheads
That means Allen Kessler won this round of the Lifelong Lastlonger $100 bet.
Joy just missed the money as her last 35oo was forced into the pot and her hand didn't hold.
In a prior hand after flopping fives, her kicker was edged out by one card - crippling her stack.
It was fun reporting on the Reslocks and I'm sure we'll see more of them throughout the 2011 Borgata Spring Poker Open.
