Event 13 Recap

$200 + $30 DS Semi Turbo NL (2 Re-Entry)

Event 13 got off to a roaring start at 11am this morning with players re-entering up to two times during the first six levels. When the entries were counted, 288 turbo ready players paid into the $57,600 Total Buy in. The top prize everyone was after came in at $15,644 and the man who won the tournament and took home all the cake was Aaron Dillard. And he did it after popping 9 benedryls to aid his severe allergies. “The hardest part for me was staying awake” said Dillard.

The rest of the field was wide awake and looking to make the top 27 and the cash.

WSOP-bracelet regulars Mike 'Little Man' Sica and Jason Young both turned out for this event but failed to cash. Also joining the field today were some Borgata Spring Poker Open champs: Gil Sacks (event 2 winner), James Casement, Jr. (event 6 winner), and
Alek Givotovsky (event 8 winner). And lets not forget about Mirsad Kovaci, Frank Gangemi, Gordon Eng, Larry Gold, and Angelo Modica.

Chris Bonn (Westfield, NJ) emerged as the early chip leader and first to 100,000. But by the time we got to the top five, our players were passing millions, not thousands.

Everyone enjoyed a long dinner break, especially Angelo Fields, James Casement Jr., and Ben Galler who accumulated 660,000, 500,000, and 460,000 in chips.

Jamie Menninger (Linwood, NJ) had a nice suck-out that propelled her to 14th place along with the “Last Woman Standing” title.

And your final table included, James Casement, Ryan Chapman, Michael McGuinness, Aaron Dillard, Angelo Fields, Todd Orgel, Daniel Giaimo, Michael Kaufman, Matthew J. Piccolo and Ben Geller.

Fireworks really flew when our top three of Ryan, Aaron, and Todd seemed all to be stuck in the same one gear – ALL IN. They transferred stacks of chips to each other like there was no tomorrow.

To pick a winner would have been insane, all three had an equal shot at the top prize.

Ryan Chapman lost almost everything when his pocket threes fell short against Aaron’s pocket sevens. Soon after he settled for 3rd Place and $5,307.

More all-in’s on the heads-up front which had Aaron Dillard winning every race against Todd Orgel. Todd lost his giant chip lead and took home 2nd Place which paid him a whopping $9,218. If a picture is worth a thousand words, Todd was speechless (and camera shy).

Once again the big winner was construction worker, Aaron Dillard who flew in from Wisconsin for his two week Borgata stay and took home all the cheese.

“At one point I was down to 4,000 in chips then built it all the way up to the chip lead” said Dillard, and what made it that much more impressive is that he did it barely breathing and barely awake.

Event 13: 1st Place - Dillard

$200 + $30 DS Semi Turbo NL (2 Re-Entry)

Aaron Dillard - 1st Place - $15,644

After dominating heads up play, Aaron Dillard (Milwaukee, WI) is your Event 13 winner. He gets the trophy and the $15,644 prize.

He flew out from Milwaukee to play in a full two week slate of 2011 Boragata Spring Poker Open Events.

Dillard, a construction worker by day, took down the tournament despite being incredibly sick.

"I have bad allergies...I took 9 benedrills and had a problem staying away" admitted Aaron.

You could hear him sniffling in between hands. As for falling asleep he must have woken up to some monster cards as he was the chip leader for most of the final table.

He's taking the trophy and $15,644 worth of cheese home to his wife Nadya back in Wisconsin.

Event 13: 2nd Place - Orgel

$200 + $30 DS Semi Turbo NL (2 Re-Entry)

Todd Orgel is camera shy and did not want his picture to be taken.

When it was still three-handed, the hand of the tournament was between Todd and then chipleader Aaron Dillard.

On a diamond heavy flop of A-2-6, Aaron raised with 6-8 causing Todd to re-raise.

All the chips went in on the turn card 3 (non-diamond). Brick on the river.

Todd was slo playing pocket aces, hit a set, and got paid off.

Despite having so many chips and such a monster chip lead, Todd lost hand after hand and ended up settling for second place.

Congratulations on playing so well for such a long time and for your $9,218 2nd Place payout.

Event 13 - 3rd Place - Chapman

$200 + $30 DS Semi Turbo NL (2 Re-Entry)

Ryan Chapman - 3rd Place - $5,307

Ryan Chapman was short stacked after losing a 2.5 million dollar pot to Aaron Dillard.

Aaron's 7-7 vs. Ryan's 3-3. Board ran 9-2-4-4-2 and all the sudden, Aaron was second in chips, very close to Todd Orgel and the chip lead.

Another hand that crippled Champman was when Aaron caught the nut flush on the river and Ryan folded.

The hand that took his final forced all-in blind was 8-3 vs. Todd's K-3.

King on the flop spelled curtains for Chapman who took home $5,307 for his third place finish.

Event 14 Recap

Seniors NL

124 Seniors set out today at 12 noon to find out who among them would be crowned Borgata Senior Champion and take home part of the $37,200 Total Buy-In. When the dust settled a little past midnight, the man holding all the chips was Harvey Layton who maneuvered his way through the final table like the "reading" specialist he is.

We made a lot of jokes at the expense of the Seniors and they all took them in stride with a good sense of humor. Top ten zingers Gorilla overheard or recorded included:

10. "The Senior tournament, brought to you by Depends and Geritol."
9. "When we were in school there was no history."
8. "A round of prune juice, it's on me."
7. "We need cards with bigger print."
6. "None of us are retired, we'll be working until we're 80."
5. "It's a reunion of the Last Supper."
4."Smartest move they made was putting us near the bathrooms."
3. "I remember when the Dead Sea was only sick."
2. "4 pm dinner break, so we can hit the early bird special."
1. "What raise? I didn't hear it."

Our Senior Trip included notables such as Don Brown, Bob Goldsmith, Ross Schwartz, Sheree Bykofsky, and Chris Reslock.

A sore spot to some and totally acceptable to others included an entry from 28 year old Angelo Modica (Astoria, NY) who looked more like a Senior in High School than a Senior Citizen. Angelo came in 12th place and cashed for $722.

Top 18 got paid which left Ben Laves (Summerset, NJ) out of the money as he bubbled when his A-K ran into pocket rockets.

First players to reach 100,000 chips were Bob Polunas (Toms River, NJ) and
Dan "The Man" Moskowitz (NYC). Dan maintained the lead until being felted with two tables left for a min cash.

A funny side note had two players with the same name and same exact birthdate (day&year) going deep. Thomas John McCann and John McCann.

Third place prize of $3,428 went to Richard Pilchman a member of the Rack Pack, a poker community family that rails each other when they make final tables. Richard’s wife Lynn and friend Patty rooted him into the bronze.

Second place of $5,954 was awarded to oil man, Bob Polunas who splits his playing time between Borgata and Vegas where he’s currently constructing a new home.

But once again the first place prize of $10,826 and the trophy went to Super Senior Harvey Layton from Devon, PA. Now retired, Harvey used to teach kids how to read and bills himself as a reading specialist. Of course he made some great reads today as he crushed it on the final table.

Almost everyone liked one another and enjoyed playing in such a pleasant environment. After 12 hours of play, and being past most of their bedtimes, the final table was looking to wrap things up as quickly as possible.

No grumpy old men at Borgata – if you played today with the Seniors, you can check one more thing off your bucket list.

Event 13: 4th place - Geller

$200 + $30 DS Semi Turbo NL (2 Re-Entry)

Ben Geller (Far Rockaway, NY) got all-in and called by Ryan Chapman.  Ben's K9 of hearts needed help against Ryan's A6 of clubs.  The board came T 5 3 J 2 -- with three hearts -- and Ben doubled up to over 1.3 million.  Ryan was left with ~660k.

Ben Geller

Ryan opened for 160k utg and Aaron Dillard made it 1 million smooth from the button.  Ryan gave it some thought, then called all-in, showing 97 suited.  Aaron was way ahead with pocket Kings.  Then the board came Q J 9 Q 9 and Ryan caught what he needed on the river to double up.

Ryan was close to 1.5 million after that pot.  Aaron was left with about 3 million.

Ben Geller then flat called from the small blind.  Ryan raised from the big, Ben limp-re-raised to 300k, Ryan shoved and Ben called all-in.

Ryan held QJ offsuit.  Ben held 43 offsuit (I don't make this stuff up, folks).

The flop came Q 4 3, giving Ryan top pair, but giving Ben two pair.  The turn was an inconsequential King, but then a Queen on the river again delivered the winner to Ryan.

Ben Geller finished in 4th place, earning $4,302.

Event 13: Geller's Got Game

$200 + $30 DS Semi Turbo NL (2 Re-Entry)

Aaron Dillard seems to be running the table over, raising nearly every hand and winning several in a row.  When not called, he's showing down the winning hand anyway.

He's up to ~3.6 million, which is half of all the chips in play (7.2 million).

He did surrender his big blind (60k) when Ben Geller moved all-in from the button.

Four-handed play continues.

Event 14: Harvey Layton - 1st Place

Seniors NL

Harvey Layton - 1st Place - $10,826

Congratulations to Harvey Layton (Devon, PA) who told me he feels marvelous after outlasting the other 124 Seniors to take down Event 14.

"Good structure and very pleasant players" said our winner.

Harvey is a retired reading specialist which means he used to teach children elements of reading.

Does it mean he's a specialist when it comes to reading poker players?

Apparently so, since Layton just took down first place for $10,826.

Great job Harvey and thanks to all the Seniors who came out to play.

Event 14: Bob Polunas - 2nd Place

Seniors NL

Bob Polunas - 2nd Place - $5,954

Bob Polunas is from Toms River, NJ but come July will have another residence in Vegas where he already travels eight times a year to play poker.

Bob is gearing up for the WSOP shootout which he enters each year.

An Environmental Oil Consultant, Bob is pretty slick at the tables. He was the chip leader for a good part of the tournament and finished up in the Seniors for $5,954.

Event 13: Chip Count Update

$200 + $30 DS Semi Turbo NL (2 Re-Entry)

End of level and the final four players are taking a short bio-break.  Here are some rough chip counts:

Ryan Chapman - 2.35 million
Aaron Dillard - 2.2 million
Todd Orgel - 1.45 million
Ben Geller - 900k

After the break, play resumed with blinds of 30k/60k and 5k antes.

Event 14: Richard Pilchman - 3rd Place

Seniors NL

Richard Pilchman - 3rd Place - $3,428

Richard Pilchman's wife Lynn was watching from the rail and cheering her man all the way into third place for $3,428.

Lynn and Patty and Richard are all part of a poker community support group they named, "The Rack Pack".

Another cash for the Pack.

Event 14: Bill Sussman - 4th Place

Seniors NL

Bill Sussman - 4th Place - $2,887

Long day for Bill Sussman who ends the night in 4th Place for $2,887.

Event 14: Vasan Subbiah - 5th Place

Seniors NL

Vasan Subbiah - 5th Place - $2,165

You know these Seniors, the clock strikes midnight and everybody wants to speed things up and get to the finish line.

Vasan Subbiah takes home $2,165 for his 5th place finish.
